Solange is EVERYTHING.

Solange Knowles.

An Iconic Legend.

Solange was 21/22 around the time she released this album, which is insane. The confidence, the self-assurance, the vision. I admire how Solange does things her way and her way only. She doesn't care what people think and that's hard for a lot of early 20 somethings to grasp. This album specifically gave me the confidence and still gives me the confidence to be myself. It made me feel like being different way okay, that it was actually cool. It also made me feel like it was okay to still be figuring out who I am, and to say fuck you to anyone who doesn't understand me. Most importantly, it taught me to be my unapologetic self.

Fuck The Industry

"People talking shit, I don't give a damn"

"I'm not apologetic, if you don't like it's probably cause you don't get it"

"I can do anything, I remember the doc saying what you gon do girl you 17?"

I love how Solange is so boastful on this record. She believes in herself, knows herself, and isn't going to let anyone label her. As a 23 year old, I admire that. It's something I'm striving towards. The ability to let go of the labels and create my own.

God Given Name

"I'm not her and never will be"

"I'm not becoming expectations"

"I'm sorry if I'm talking shit, but I really do mean well"

Relatable! Being compared to someone is very frustrating. Like can I just be? Like I can just be myself on my own? I'm never going to be that person-ever, so let it go! It also kind of feels like a dig, like the person I am isn't good enough. I don't know, but I love how Solange was able to put this feeling into words. Also, can we talk about the amazing samples she always selects? Perfect.

I feel like I can write about almost all the songs on the album. It was such a unique sound for 2008 and as a 21/22 year old at that? Give her her flowers. Solange has always remained true to herself and her sound. It's not surprising that she went on to create the incredible A Seat at the Table and When I Get Home. Now we need Solo to curate another Saint Heron album.

The power of music is incredible. A body of work can fill you with so many emotions. It can make you cry, laugh, dance, or take that step in the direction of your dreams. It's so powerful and that's why I wanted to create a blog about it.
